Features of 316/316L Stainless Steel

  1. Outstanding corrosion resistance and tensile strength
  2. At high temperatures, high creep, stress-to-rupture, and tensile strength
  3. Rust-resistant, salt and calcium brine resistant
  4. Annealing, or heat treatment, can be done at temperatures ranging from 1,900 to 2,100 degrees Fahrenheit (1,038 to 1,149 degrees Celsius).

Process of 316(L) Stainless Steel Casting

Stainless steel castings in 316 or 316L can make using the investment casting technique, which has been known for hundreds of years and can be used to manufacture a variety of designs. There are several steps to the procedure:

  1. Creating a mold from a 3D model.
  2. Pouring wax into the mold to make wax patterns, inspecting and modifying the patterns if they are defective.
  3. Weld the wax patterns together to make a complete assembly.
  4. Form a shell by dipping wax into ceramic slurry.
  5. To remove the wax, heat the ceramic shell.
  6. Take the molten shell and pour it on.
  7. Breaking the shell apart and shot blasting or performing other surface finishing operations.

Between 16 and 24 percent chromium and up to 35 percent nickel are contained in 304 stainless steel. Carbon and manganese are also present in trace concentrations. The most prevalent type of stainless steel casting used around the world is 304 stainless steel, specifically a type known as 18-8 stainless steel, or 18/8 stainless steel, which includes 18 percent chromium and 8% nickel (as the name implies).
According to its molecular structure, 304 stainless steel is an austenitic steel. Austenitic stainless steel castings provide a good mix of strength and workability across a wide temperature range, which makes them suitable in a variety of applications.
304 stainless steel castings are commonly used in the kitchen and food industry, particularly for beer brewing, milk processing, and wine production. Architectural designs, chemical containers, water filtration screens, and so forth all use it.
Note: 304 stainless steel castings may not be suited for high-saline conditions such as outside seaside locations or cold, ice areas exposed to de-icing salts on a frequent basis.

Stainless steel castings made of 316 stainless steel are the second most popular in the world. It is distinguished by the presence of molybdenum, which accounts for around 2 to 3 percent of the entire composition and ensures a higher level of corrosion resistance.
Other stainless steel castings from the 300 series can contain up to 7% molybdenum. It’s especially beneficial in environments where 304 stainless steel castings fail, such as chlorides and/or other industrial chemicals.
316 stainless steel castings are appropriate for high moisture settings with regular salt exposure, such as glass spider fittings, glass spigots, and so on, in outdoor applications. 316 stainless steel castings, sometimes known as “marine-grade” steel, are frequently used for maritime hardware. It is used in laboratories, coastal construction, and marine fittings in addition to the traditional applications of 304 stainless steel.
